Cognition · about three minutes

Your judgment goes before your legs do.

And the person it is happening to is almost always the last one in the group to notice.

What degrades, and in what order

Sleep deprivation measurably impairs decision-making, reaction time and focus. In endurance settings that shows up as navigational errors and poor race strategy: choices that look inexplicable afterwards and felt entirely reasonable at the time.

Testing after ultra-distance events finds declines in memory, in choice-making and in reaction time. The legs are usually still working. The thing directing them is not working as well.

In hunters, even mild dehydration is associated with poor decision-making, falls, and delayed reaction in emergencies. Which matters more in a setting where the emergencies involve terrain, weather, and firearms.

48–90hawake is where the literature starts reporting hallucination and acute psychosis, well beyond ordinary tiredness.

Why you cannot self-assess it

The faculty that would notice the decline is the faculty that is declining. That is not a paradox so much as a practical warning: your own read on how well you are thinking is the least reliable instrument you are carrying.

Which is why the people who do this seriously use external checks. Fixed turnaround times decided in advance. A partner with the authority to call it. Written decision rules made while rested, because a rule you set at hour two is worth more than a judgment you make at hour twenty.

What we are not going to sell you

Here is the part where a supplement brand normally arrives with a solution. We are not going to.

There is research on creatine and cognition under sleep deprivation, and it is genuinely interesting. It is also run at doses far above what we put in a stick. The lowest studied dose is roughly three times ours, and a 2024 systematic review of the area is titled “Creatine supplementation research fails to support the theoretical basis for an effect on cognition”.

We put 5g of creatine in this because of what it does for repeated output. We are not going to tell you it makes you sharper at hour twenty, because the dose we deliver has not been shown to do that. When that changes, we will say so here.

The obstacle is real and worth naming on its own. Not everything true about a hard day is an argument for buying something.
